This opportunistic bacterium exhibits remarkable resistance to multiple classes of antimicrobials, along with a high capacity for genetic adaptation and survival in hospital environments. Carbapenem resistance, considered critical by the World Health Organization (WHO), is largely attributed to the blaOXA-23 gene, detected in over 90% of isolates in Brazil. Studies conducted between 2015 and 2022 by the Secretaria de Vigilância em Saúde e Ambiente (SVSA) reveal the widespread presence of this resistance profile across all regions of the country. Additionally, data from Latin America confirm the relevance of the issue on a continental scale, with the blaOXA-23 gene also prevailing in countries such as Argentina and Mexico. his study was carried out through an integrative, qualitative, and exploratory literature review, and aims to describe the general characteristics of A. baumannii, its main virulence factors and resistance mechanisms, as well as to analyze the available epidemiological data on the prevalence of carbapenem-resistant strains in Brazil and Latin America. Finally, it was concluded that the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and pan-resistant (PDR) profiles reinforces the urgent need for epidemiological surveillance and the development of new therapeutic strategies.pt-BRAcinetobacter baumanniiResistência antimicrobianablaOXA23Prevalência de carbapenemasesAntimicrobial resistancePrevalence of carbapenemasesAcinetobacter baumannii: frequência de cepas resistentes a carbapenêmicosbachelorThesis
