Its drainage basin faces an environmental management process resulting from the accelerated and disorderly urbanization process in recent decades, with negative impacts on water resources. This work aimed to carry out a bibliographical review on the environmental conditions of the Pitimbu River Basin, to identify possible knowledge gaps and guide future research projects focusing on the basin's water resources. The bibliographical research was carried out in the Scielo and Web of Science databases, as well as in the UFRN institutional repository. A total of 30 documents were found, that were relevant to the objectives of this research. After reading these works, it was possible to conclude that there is a gap in knowledge about the hydrological processes of the basin, that the majority of the works reviewed addressed the problem of water quality and that there are no studies on polluting loads nor strategies to control these loads. . This literature review highlights the importance of integrated water resources management strategies, pollution control actions and restoration of riparian forests for environmental sustainability and water security in the metropolitan region of Natal.
