The main objective was to analyze the physical-chemical and. microbiological characteristics of the water in the reservoir to identify possible sources of pollution, classify the water according to environmental legislation, and propose measures to maintain water quality. Physico-chemical and microbiological analyses were carried out at different points in the reservoir. The variables measured included thermotolerant coliforms, dissolved oxygen (DO), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The samples were collected over a period that covered rainy and dry months. The Water Quality Index (IQA) was calculated to determine the overall quality of the water. The results indicated that water quality improved significantly from May onwards, due to the large volume of rainfall between April and May, which increased the volume of the weir and improved water quality. The IQA revealed that the lentic environment generally had good water quality, with all the points analyzed in the last month exceeding 70% IQA. Point 02, close to houses in the rural area and subject to polluting loads, showed a linear increase in quality indices due to a reduction in thermotolerant coliforms and an improvement in DO and BOD concentrations. Points 01 and 03, where the water is collected, showed class 02 quality, suitable for human consumption with conventional treatment. The study highlighted the importance of carrying out collections throughout the year, covering periods of rain and drought, to accurately portray variations in water quality. Maintaining water quality is essential for preventing waterborne diseases. The study warns of the need to strengthen water quality control mechanisms, proposing that this concern become a comprehensive public policy aimed at guaranteeing quality water and health for the entire populationAttribution 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/br/Qualidade de ÁguaAnálise Físico-químicaGestão de Recursos HídricosWater qualityPhysical-chemical analysisWater resource managementAvaliação da qualidade das águas do açude Caraibeiras na cidade de Picuí/PBbachelorThesisCNPQ::ENGENHARIAS
