Thus, the literature has few works with column tests. A column system was assembled to evaluate the removal of phenanthrene by in situ chemical oxidation combined with a permeable catalyst barrier (modified diatomite). The sodium persulphate oxidant was injected upward into the column. To analyse the experiment, an experimental design 22 with 3 central points was applied and the independent variables were: flow and injected persulfate concentration. The persulfate was activated by passing through the catalyst barrier in the column, generating sulfate radicals, which attack the contaminating. The results obtained from the different column regions evidenced that the increase of the oxidant concentration and the flow reduction promoted a better percentage of contaminant removal. Being this, the combination of degradation (oxidation) and the amount dragged by the liquid phase. With an optimum flow rate of 3.5 mL.min-1 coming from the experimental design, a control test was carried out with water being injected for 4 hours into the column and, finally, the residual phenanthrene in the soil was determined. In this optimum condition, the drag was 0.2 and 3% at the base and at the top of the contaminated section of the column. Finally, two new bed filling arrangements were added, the catalyst being mixed with the soil and transferring the catalyst from the column to an external cartridge.
