In this context, the XR is used as adsorbent for the removal of sulfur in the form of thiophene in the fuels, since it is an alternative adsorbent material reducing the environmental impact caused by the disposal of the residue itself. The objective was to find the best adsorption condition of thiophene, using shale as adsorbent impregnated with Cu and Zn. The physical and chemical characteristics of the material were adequate for the adsorption study. The efficiency of the adsorption process was evaluated in terms of sulfur removal in toluene/hexane containing solutions in the ratio 15:85 by volume. The influence of agitation time (60-180 min), temperature (25-35 °C), adsorbent mass (0.1-0.25 g), initial sulfur concentration (100-250 ppm) were evaluated by use of a complete factorial design 24 applied to investigate the effect of the variables on the efficiency of sulfur removal in fuels. The optimum values of the parameters tested for maximum sulfur removal were obtained as follows: contact time = 180 min, temperature = 35 °C, adsorbent mass = 0.25 g and initial sulfur concentration = 100 ppm. This can provide theoretical bases for new researches and alternatives of use for the tailings of the industrialization of schist in order to evaluate their potentialities. Therefore, the present study revealed that the shale schist can be used as a sulfur adsorbent material for transport fuels, in which it has been one of the main preoccupations in the last decades minimizing the environmental and economic impacts.
