Methods: Descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, having as data source the Nursing Observatory, of the Federal Council of Nursing. Data collection considered the accumulated from March 2020 to July 2021, considering variables such as sex, age group, geographic region, number of suspected and confirmed cases and number of deaths. Results: Brazil recorded, in the period investigated, 30,643 nursing professionals with a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis and 800 lost lives. The northern region has the highest number of confirmed cases, deaths and the highest fatality rate. The number of deaths is higher in females, especially in the 51-60 age group. Among men, there were more deaths in the range of 41 to 50 years. The high numbers identified required an important discussion regarding the working conditions of these professionals during the pandemic. Conclusion: The pandemic unveiled the need for debate on the quality-of-care services and health working conditions, because when precarious, they can also be a source of physical and mental suffering for the nursing professional.https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.pt-brEnfermagemCOVID-19Condições de trabalhoPandemiasMorteNursingAdoecimento e morte por Covid-19 na enfermagem brasileiraIllness and death from Covid-19 in brazilian nursingEnfermedad y muerte por Covid-19 en la enfermería brasileñaarticle
