In the context of eutrophication, phosphorus plays an important role as a limiting element for primary production, because some algae are capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Given this, the sediment is a relevant compartment due to its role as a phosphorus sink from the water column, although it is also a source of reactive phosphorus in the internal fertilization process. Semi-arid climatic conditions, such as heavy rainfall in short periods and prolonged drought events, make the lakes sediment subject to drying and reflooding, in addition to promoting accumulation of nutrients, hence these systems are more vulnerable to eutrophication. In this sense, the study of the internal fertilization of semi-arid reservoirs becomes relevant, as these systems which are used for public supply have a long residence time, usually with water depletion events. The objective of this work was to evaluate the phosphorus release in a reservoir in the Potiguar semi-arid after a drought period. To do so a reflood simulation in laboratory was employed and the phosphorus release was measured experiment for 14 days (2 weeks). NO3-, SRP e OD concentration were monitored as well as temperature. The results showed that there was enough phosphorus release in the sediment to cause reservoir eutrophication (> 50µg.L-1), despite previous studies showing that 84.84% of the SRP is present in the sediment in unavailable forms. However, an increase in NO3- concentration was able to reduce the release of SRP later, suggesting the importance of nitrate concentration in the internal phosphorus fertilization dynamics.
