Despite divergent scientific evidence in different indications, NIV has become an indispensable part of ICU routine. Thus, a number of hospital services have associated it with weaning patients off invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV); that is, NIV is applied after extubation as part of a continuous process, raising the hypothesis that its use could have positive effects on the success of tracheal extubation. Objective: Assess the efficacy of NIV for prophylaxis and reversing ARpF after tracheal extubation. Methods: A bibliographic survey was conducted of scientific articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish, published between 2006 and 2016, in Scielo, PubMed, Lilacs, and Medline databases. The articles discussed in the study met the following criteria: use of NIV afer extubation and a sample composed of adult patients. Articles focused on pediatrics and neonatology, despite using NIV after extubation, were excluded. Results: Fifteen articles were selected; of these, 4 did not meet the objective of this review, and 6 did not satisfy inclusion criteria. Thus, 5 articles complied with the requirements stipulated in the methodology. Conclusion: The prophylactic use of NIV in patients with ARpF after extubation was a safe and effective technique to avoid reintubation. Accordingly, this study will serve as the basis to prepare a ventilatory weaning protocol for the physiotherapy services of Coronel Pedro Germano Central Hospital.openAccessVentilação Mecânica.
