Therefore, studies on the characteristics of seaweed communities, such as species richness, diversity and abundance are important to assess the ecological quality of these environments. This study was divided into two chapters: the Chapter 1 aimed to characterize and compare the seaweed distribution concerning the zonation that occurs in a reef area in the Environmental Protection Area of Coral Reefs in Rio Grande do Norte. For this study, three sampling sections were selected and three points in each section were positioned in the intertidal region (high tide, mid tide and low tide zone). In each point, three 10-m transects were performed where three 0.25-m² quadrats were positioned in order to determinate the biomass. All the material in the quadrats was collected and identified. In this study, 56 seaweed species were recorded, of which 37 belonged to Rhodophyta, 8 belonged to Heterokonthophyta and 11 belonged to Chlorophyta. The points of the mid tide zone and low tide zone had higher biomass, diversity and species richness, whereas the point of high tide zone had the highest dominance. Based on these results, it was possible to establish differences in seaweed composition among the points of intertidal zone in all sections, being these differences caused by variations in the hydrodynamic intensity. The Chapter 2 aimed to analyze the contributions of the seaweed farming in the conservation of natural banks, and the socioeconomic questions involving the members of Associação de Maricultores de Algas de Rio do Fogo (AMAR). In this study, it became clear that the seaweed farming has contributed to reduce the pressure on natural banks and has become a family income supplement for the members.
