These newborns are hospitalized from weeks to months in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), undergoing invasive, noninvasive painful procedures and various stimuli in an environment that contrasts spatially and temporally with the mother's uterus, which may cause damage to the newborn sleep. Obtaining reference values for the sleep-wake cycle of newborns during hospitalization in this environment is essential to contribute to the planning of non-pharmacological therapies and humanized care practices that improve the newborn sleep quality. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to describe the reference values of the sleep-wake cycle of neonates admitted to the NICU and summarize the main sleep assessment tools used during the neonatal hospitalization phase. Methods and Analysis: This protocol uses PRISMA-P as a guideline. Searches will be conducted in MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge and PsycINFO using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) descriptors to search for publications that provide reference values for the sleep/wake cycle of newborns admitted to the NICU. Two independent reviewers will search the articles, while a third reviewer will analyze the disagreements. Ethics and dissemination: No ethical approval is required for this study as we will only use data from previously published papers.
