Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is carried out through the intermittent administration of 100% oxygen at a pressure higher than atmospheric. The aim of this study was to investigate morphological aspects related to diabetic nephropathy (DN) in rats submitted to HBOT. Sixty-day-old Wistar rats (Rattus Norvegicus) weighing between 220 and 280g were divided into the following groups: C (normoglycemic animals), n = 12; C+OHB (normoglycemic animals submitted to HBOT), n = 12; D (diabetic animals) n = 12; D+OHB (diabetic animals submitted to HBOT), n = 12. The diabetic animals were induced with a single dose of streptozotocin (STZ, 60 mg/kg, Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis USA), while the C+OHB and D+OHB groups were treated daily with OHB for 60 min, 5 days a week, for 5 weeks. After euthanasia, the kidneys were collected for assessment of structural changes in the tissue parenchyma, assessment of renal fibrosis and renal protein expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1). The results showed that group D had an increase in the renal corpuscle, Bowman's space and atrophy of the distal tubular epithelium, as well as collagen accumulation. Treatment with OHB was effective in attenuating the atrophy of the distal contorted epithelium and the expression of TGF-β1. These results suggest that OHB was effective in attenuating the morphological alterations characteristic of DN.
