It is estimated that in the world more than 56.8 million people need palliative care every year and of these, 7% are children. Nursing acts in the elaboration, execution and evaluation of health care plans, being able to make use of the promising approach and resources of good palliative care practices. The general objective of the study is to build a practical guidance guide on the application of palliative care by nursing in a University maternity hospital in Northeast Brazil. As specific objectives to identify the knowledge of the nursing team of an intensive care unit on palliative care; describe palliative care developed in a neonatal intensive care unit; to analyze the discourse of the nursing team about their performance in palliative care in a neonatal intensive care unit. This is an exploratory-descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The instrument used to collect information was the use of focus groups. The analysis was carried out in the light of the thematic analysis framework. From the analysis it was possible to construct two categories. It was identified that nursing has difficulty accepting the death of a Newborn, there is no team alignment in decision-making, causing anguish in the team. Despite the little knowledge of nursing about the subject, they defend comfort, quality of life, and family embracement. Demonstrate the need for in-service training. In the second category, nursing feels the need for institutional directives that guide individualized care. Humanized care in controlling pain in newborns are prioritized by nursing, as well as the inclusion of the family in care, and comfort at the time of death. Despite the technical mastery of the profession, palliative skills and interdisciplinarity, it is essential. The practical guide will contribute to good practices in neonatal palliative care.Acesso AbertoEnfermagemCuidados paliativosUnidade de Terapia Intensiva NeonatalSaúde integralAtuação da enfermagem em cuidados paliativos: guia prático para uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva NeonatalNursing performance in palliative care: a practical guide for a Neonatal Intensive Care UnitmasterThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS DA SAUDE
