Historical aspects of the culture of music bands in Brazil and in Rio Grande do Norte and the relation of the band to the personal formation of the individuals. Some considerations about music in the educational process and the need to recognize the musical identity from what is performed in the band: rehearsals, presentations and concerts are reported. As for the methodology, it was decided to develop a case study through a qualitative approach. The data of this work were collected through a questionnaire with the members of the band, the parents and relatives of the members, and also through semi-structured interviews with the conductor of the Band and community members representing Santa Cruz institutions.
