In response to this challenge, specially concerning the health care of this population, countless medical schools throughout the world have been developing Medical Education programs in the topics of Geriatrics. The aim of this study was to produce a matrix of competencies for the teaching of Geriatrics and Gerontology in the Medical School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). It is an exploratory, prospective study developed in stages: documentary analysis of the geriatric competencies already declared on our Medical School curriculum; literature search for national and international matrixes of competencies in the field of Geriatrics; online survey with the teachers of Geriatrics curricular components to investigate their perception of the teaching of Geriatrics and Gerontology at UFRN and ask for suggestions on ways to improve it; elaboration of a matrix of competencies in Geriatrics and Gerontology for the UFRN Medical School. To produce this matrix, we requested 11 geriatricians who are teachers or tutors at higher education institutions in Rio Grande do Norte to analyze it and also give further suggestions on teaching and evaluation methodologies. Using the Delphi Strategy, there was a consensus reach after 2 rounds (50% agreement + fully agree) in all the contents and competencies proposed. The specialists mainly suggested traditional learning and evaluation strategies, demonstrating the need of further teacher training on new methodologies. As a final product, we achieved a consensus for "UFRN Medical School Essential Geriatrics Competencies" presented in this article. Based on this, we intend to gradually insert Geriatrics teaching along the Medical School, preferably with multidisciplinary involvement.
