It begins with a historical perspective on the variation of beauty standards, emphasizing the need for teaching image literacy that encompasses not only social and historical aspects but, especially, a critical perspective. Such an analysis is grounded in the perception of beauty developed by philosopher Roger Scruton; Paula Sibilia's view on the spectacularization of existence; and the critical examination of imagery on social media, specifically Instagram, in comparison with the photographs of the artist Sebastião Salgado. The methodology of this investigation is based on action research, with the practice conducted in a case study grounded in Ana Mae Barbosa's Triangular Approach. This approach guides an investigative foundation based on active student participation, promoting dialogues and critical analyses. The foundational basis is the visual perception derived from photography as an artistic language, facilitating the production of images through a photography contest. The aim was to elucidate the question: Is it possible to teach the appreciation of beauty based on the values that individuals consider fundamental?
