At the molecular level, such phenomena can cause changes in chemical structure, composition or physical structure. At the macroscopic level, these changes can alter geometry or physical properties. In this work, carbon-epoxy composites were exposed to natural aging for a period of 90 days. Dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to evaluate the physical and chemical effects of aging on the composite. Aged composites showed reduction in interlaminar shear strength, mass gain, Tg decrease, surface fiber exposure and change in FTIR spectra.
