Considering that the waste presents different degrees of danger, proper management is necessary in order to avoid possible damages caused to human health and the environment. Educational and research institutions account for approximately 1% of the total hazardous waste produced in a developed country. This work aims to perform a survey of the current chemical residues of the Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, in order to draw up and elaborate chemical waste management proposals that correspond to the conditions and needs of the department. The data for the accomplishment of this work were collected in the laboratories of the DEQ through the application of a questionnaire and count of the residue stocked in these places. On the basis of the data obtained it is possible to elaborate proposals for the management of this waste. The proposals were based on the prevention and adoption of specific standards that would enhance the effectiveness of the initial steps in the chemical waste management system, as well as ways to eliminate present environmental liabilities.
