Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação em Odontologia) - Departamento de Odontologia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2022.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/50496Introduction: Oral cancer (OC) is a public health problem, as it still has high mortality rates, mainly due to late diagnosis. Aim: To evaluate the clinical outcome of patients diagnosed with OC at the Stomatology Service from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), which were referred to the Liga Norte Riograndense Contra o Câncer (LNRCC), between the years of 2010 and 2019. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional study in which, based on the analysis of data contained in the records of the Stomatology Service of the Department of Dentistry at UFRN, all clinical diagnoses of oral cancer forwarded to the Liga Norteriograndense Contra o Câncer were located, where it was possible to perform the second data collection. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) statistical program. Results: Considering the period selected for this research, 159 patients were affected with malignant neoplasms in the service, representing 3.5% of the cases. Of these, 68 (42.7%) were treated in the LNRCC. The most frequent type of OC was oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) (70%), commonly found in male patients (60.3%), with brown skin (39.7%), smokers (93.4%) and with a mean age of 63.9 years. OSCC cases were most located in tongue (30.9%). After diagnosis, patients took an average of 41.4 ± 35.2 days to start treatment, mostly through the public health system. When initiating treatment, most patients presented lesions in late stages (III and IV) and death as an outcome happened in 54.4% of cases. The average time of clinical follow-up was 35.7 ± 31 months and recurrence was seen in 36.5% of cases. Conclusion: The results of this research shows that OSCC is a common OC which still has high rates of mortality and recurrence, a fact that reinforces the constant need for tracking this disease in primary care and awareness campaigns for the population in relation to this disease.
