The aim of this study was to evaluate the recognition of facial stimuli in preterm infants in the first few hours of life. Methods: We studied 54 newborns and 23 neighboring preterm and 31 term infants. The stimuli consisted of two white boards in head shape and neck with a black outer border: one with the design of a similar face to the human face (lined eyes above the nose and mouth), and one with the drawing of a unconfigured face (eyes, mouth and nose misaligned). Results: Newborns premature recognize facial stimuli and show no preference for faces configured (p = 0.42), unlike newborns terms (p = 0.003).embargoedAccessRecém-nascidos. Face. Visão.
