The purpose of this study is to assess and compare the currently available methodologies for estimating the carbon footprint in this sector, aiming to enhance sustainable practices. Through a systematic literature review, different methodological approaches are explored, identifying the advantages, challenges, and limitations of each. Among the intermediate objectives, the identification of the main methodologies used and a detailed analysis of their structures and characteristics are highlighted, with an emphasis on the advantages related to accuracy and tracking of emissions. To achieve these results, a SWOT analysis of the main methodologies used in calculating the carbon footprint in lodging facilities was conducted. This approach allowed the identification of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of each methodology, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the current landscape. Additionally, this research proposes recommendations for the appropriate choice of methodologies, aligned with global sustainability goals. These guidelines have the potential to drive more responsible practices in the hotel industry, resulting in reduced carbon emissions and promoting a more conscientious approach to tourism in the face of global climate change. In summary, this dissertation contributes to the advancement of sustainable tourism by addressing the crucial need for an accurate assessment of the carbon footprint in lodging facilities. By critically evaluating existing methodologies and proposing refined selection criteria, the study guides the hotel industry to adopt effective strategies in reducing the carbon footprint.
