Sickle cell trait is characterized by the presence of Hb S in heterozygosis and is rarely associated with significant clinical manifestations, so that blood donors with sickle cell trait can donate normally, but this blood cannot be used in patients with hemoglobinopathies, with severe acidosis, in newborns, intrauterine transfusion, surgical procedures with cardiopulmonary bypass or hypothermia. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of sickle cell trait in blood donors in Brazil, performing a bibliographical review in scientific databases, where articles with data from 11 blood centers and 2 hospitals in cities in the 5 Brazilian regions were used. The results obtained from the analyzes showed a difference in positivity for sickle cell trait among blood donors, ranging from 0,19% in Porto Alegre (RS) to 3,64% in Piauí (PI). After estimating the average by region of the country, it was obtained for the North Region: 1,52%; South Region: 0,46%; Southeast Region: 3,2%; Midwest Region: 1,81% and Northeast Region with 2% of blood donors with sickle cell trait. Regarding the variables ethnicity and sex of donors, most individuals with sickle cell trait were black and male. The detection of the sickle cell trait is of paramount importance, as it allows genetic guidance and counseling for the individual and his family through specialized monitoring programs.Attribution 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/br/Hemoglobina STraço falciformeDoador de sangueHemoglobin SSickle Cell TraitBlood DonorPrevalência do traço falciforme em doadores de sangue no BrasilPrevalence of sickle cell trait in blood donors in BrazilbachelorThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS DA SAUDE
