Despite their economic and social relevance, significant gaps persist in the management of hygienic-sanitary quality, resulting in challenges such as economic losses and risks to public health. Objective: This study used the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology to develop an artifact capable of supporting quality management in the supermarket sector, focusing on food safety and hygienic-sanitary control. Methodology: A research, with an applied and qualitative approach, was carried out in a supermarket chain in Rio Grande do Norte. The DSR method adopted comprises the steps of problem identification, which included raising awareness of the problem and reviewing the literature or searching for existing theories to configure the class of problems, developing, creating and evaluating the solution and validating and communicating the results. Additionally, a documentary review was carried out. Results: The developed tool, called the Hygienic-Sanitary Quality Control Effectiveness Verification Tool for Food Sold in Supermarket Retail, proved to be viable and applicable. Its use allowed the identification of critical control points, functioning as a strategic tool for managers, facilitating the implementation of corrective actions in a more assertive manner.
