However, the morning school hours generate a decrease in the duration of sleep on the days of the week, causing a picture of sleep deprivation and irregularity. To study adolescents in high school and in college would make it possible to see if older adolescents suffer more sleep deprivation than younger ones and, if so, it would be associated with greater academic demand. The objective of this study was to compare the habits and quality of sleep, daytime sleepiness, and attention among adolescents of high school and college of a private school and the biosciences area of a public institution of higher education, respectively. The study was attended by 88 adolescents (54 girls and 34 boys), 48 enrolled in the morning session of the high school (G1 – 15,5 ± 0,7 years) and 40 enrolled in disciplines in the first hours of the morning of college (G2 – 20,4 ± 3,2 years). Students filled a Sleep log containing the Maldonado Sleepiness Scale for 10 days, the "Sleep and Health" questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Attention components were evaluated by the Continuous Execution Task (CET) applied in the morning. G2 tended to sleep later (Anova, p = 0.07) and woke up later than G1 (Anova, p <0.05). Although the time in bed did not differ between groups, G1 presented a greater irregularity in this variable between week and weekend, and worse sleep quality (Anova, p <0,05) and greater sleepiness on waking (Anova, p <0.05). Regarding the components of attention, G2 presented a greater reaction time for the wrong answers in relation to the sustained and selective attention, while the G1 presented a greater percentage of wrong answers and omissions in all the components of the attention, and greater standard deviation of the time of correct answers throughout the task, indicating less sustained attention (Anova, p <0.05). The results show that high school adolescents are suffering from poorer quality of sleep associated with higher levels of sleepiness and reduced attention, which may have a negative effect on academic performance. Additional studies are needed to investigate the causes of these differences between the two levels of education.AdolescentesQualidade de sonoSonolência diurnaAtençãoRendimento acadêmicoAnálise comparativa dos padrões de sono entre adolescentes do ensino médio e superiorbachelorThesis
