To achieve this, three independent studies were conducted through a survey research design, with the first and third utilizing quasiexperimental designs and the second being exploratory, all cross-sectional. Data were collected online, involving 127, 438, and 422 participants, respectively, in each study. The first study demonstrated that both unpredictability beliefs and perceived harm experienced during the pandemic played a significant role in promoting self-protective and disease-avoidance behaviors, contributing to decreased subjective well-being. In the second study, childhood perceptions of family unpredictability impacted not only the expression of reproductive milestones but also fundamental motives. Behaviors focused on partner retention and family care were more frequently reported by those who reported experiencing lower unpredictability in family support during childhood. Finally, the third study highlighted that childhood perceptions of predictable family support emerged as the primary factor influencing higher levels of subjective well-being and lower levels of beliefs in unpredictability about oneself, while suggesting that the pandemic may have amplified the perception of unpredictability about the world, as observed in our sample. In summary, our results emphasize that beliefs in unpredictability and perceived harm emerged as significant predictors of self-protective and disease-avoidance behaviors during the pandemic. Additionally, childhood unpredictability in family support played a crucial role in the development of life strategies, with predictable family support underpinning a slower strategy. Individuals reported more behaviors focused on partner retention, family care, fewer beliefs in unpredictability about oneself, and higher subjective well-being during the pandemic. This integrated perspective enhances understanding of the complexity of human responses in disruptive events, emphasizing the importance of multiple environmental cues, including those experienced during development, in analyzing human behavioral plasticity.
