For the human being, clearly, water has always played a fundamental role in its existence throughout its history. Records show the use and management of water in the lives of human beings around 9000 BC. About 4,000 years ago the first water distribution system was built in India. In more recent history, beginning of 1900 the relationship of the system of water supply with diseases began to arise. Since then laws have been created to try to regulate sanitation conditions and their parts, such as the water supply system. Currently the situation of Brazil in terms of basic sanitation is worrisome, not being different from the condition of the water supply system. Today about 35 million people in the country do not have access to water. In this way there is a demand for qualified professionals to work in this area. Thus, the objective of this work was to create a mathematical programming model that can be used to assist in the teaching of water distribution networks, considering Brazilian design constraints. For this, the problem of dimensioning a water distribution network was modeled as a mixed nonlinear integer programming (MINLP), nonconvex, with equations of equality and inequality constraints, and implemented using the mathematical programming language AMPL. As results of this work were obtained: a mathematical model developed, having been formulated as a MINLP; the code of the implementation of the mathematical programming developed; and the results of the comparisons of the tests of this with the values of the literature. All comparisons were made for two cases, height of the reservoir free and for this having been fixed. In addition, two networks were created with 17 edges and 18 nodes, and 35 edges and 36 nodes, and these were dimensioned with the model created. This work contributes to the way of thinking about how to scale water distribution networks, showing an approach that is not common in Brazilian literature.openAccessHidráulica. Otimização.
