In this context, the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks have attracted much attention from the scientific community and the industry for their advanced ability to address many of the previous technologies’ deficiencies. However, in 5G networks, mobility management faces numerous needs, the main one being the handover decision. Among the various strategies used to deal with the handover decision problem, the Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) has been shown to be the most effective in terms of the benefits provided for its flexible decision-making approach. However, mobility management mechanisms blindly employ MADM methods without thorough performance analysis to justify the adoption due to their popularity. One of the main reasons for this adoption is the lack of studies informing researchers, developers, and operators about the main differences between the various MADM methods. In this work, to fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a comprehensive review of the literature on MADM methods in the domain of handover decisions, providing a detailed analysis based on a step-by-step mathematical implementation.
