The objective here is to understand the production of self portraits, in its production phases and the interpretation of the visual message taken from each image. So, the concept of representation has been discussed through the process of production of portraiture and self-portraiture in the pictorial and photographic fields, as well as the needs and stages of the production of a photopainting. Based on the image analysis methodology developed by Martine Joly (1994), a historical, social and cultural contextualisation of Telma Saraiva's productions was carried out, as the selection and description of plastic and iconic elements of each image. The identification of these visual elements allowed the interpretation of the works as well as the set of selected works, evidencing the complexity of the production of each stage of their self-portraits.
