Therefore, knowledge about work characteristics that lead to stressors in public institutions is important to promote quality of life at work. The objective of the research was to analyze how the occupational stress of employees in the work environment is evidenced, in relation to demand, control and social support, at the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN), in line with the demand-control model (Karasek adapted by Alves et al., 2004). The target population consisted of employees from all IFRN campuses. Data were obtained through a self-completed questionnaire based on the Job Stress Scale (JSS) version adapted by Alves et al (2004) and were treated by quantitative methods and descriptive statistics. The survey results showed that 49.14% of the employees were in a situation of low strain/low strain; 39.22% were in active work; 7.33% of the workers were in passive work and, finally, 4.31%, in high strain/high strain. Low strain and active work experiences, which are more prevalent in this research, are seen with a lower risk of illness. Experiences of high demand and passive work have a stronger association with regard to physical and/or psychological illness.
