Estimulação não invasiva do nervo vago como uma alternativa de tratamento da hiperatividade simpática em pacientes com Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático: uma revisão narrativa. 2021. 41 f. Monografia (Graduação em Biomedicina) – Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2021.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/45041Stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders, including Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), present an exacerbated autonomic response, leading to dysregulation of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), characterized by sympathetic hyperactivation and decreased parasympathetic tone in rest. Current forms of treatment have limitations and most patients are unable to achieve complete remission of symptoms. In this scenario, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) represents a promising therapeutic modality in the field of neuromodulation in clinical psychiatry. There are currently two ways available. The invasive form has the disadvantage of having a high cost and requiring a surgical procedure, making many patients resistant to opting for this type of medical intervention. The second form of VNS is non-invasive in nature (nVNS) and appeared to overcome such difficulties through transcutaneous devices (tVNS). Studies have shown that tVNS has effects on autonomic tone, cardiovascular function and central areas of the brain involved in emotion modulation, making it particularly applicable to patients with PTSD. There are currently two forms of transcutaneous VNS: (1) auricular (taVNS) and (2) cervical (tcVNS). Both are safe and effective in human beings, are practical to handle and have a lower cost. Both taVNS and tcVNS represent promising methodologies for the treatment of patients with psychiatric disorders related to stress and, in this perspective, this literature review analyzes the mechanisms underlying the stress response in PTSD, the physiology of the vagus nerve and its forms of stimulation (invasive and non-invasive), presenting the characteristics of the devices used, the stimulation parameters, adverse effects, safety and efficacy.Transtorno de Estresse Pós-traumáticoSistema Nervoso AutônomoNervo VagoEstimulação do Nervo Vago Não InvasivaPosttraumatic Stress DisorderAutonomic Nervous SystemVague nerveNon-invasive Vagal StimulationEstimulação não invasiva do nervo vago como uma alternativa de tratamento da hiperatividade simpática em pacientes com Transtorno de Estresse Pós-Traumático: uma revisão narrativaNon-invasive vagus nerve stimulation as an alternative treatment for sympathetic hyperactivity in patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: a narrative reviewbachelorThesis
