It was first reported in the mangroves in the state of Alagoas, and soon afterwards it was reported in other states, such as Rio Grande do Norte. Currently, there are 14 types of propolis that have been identified and are differentiated by composition, physical-chemical profile, geographic location, as well as macroscopic aspects, such as coloring. One of the biggest advantages of the red propolis, while comparing it to the others, is in its composition which is abundant in phenolic components, above all, flavonoids, isoflavones, among others, that justify the potentialities in the treatment of several diseases acting as an antimicrobial, wound cicatrization, antitumoral, antiparasitic, antihelmintic and antiviral drug. Although it presents an excellent background of properties, it is not a natural resource well used within national territory. A reflection of this is the number of patents that have been filed in recent years, where 25 are brazilian, against 150 of China and 50 of South Korea, also it reveals the asian interest in acquiring this natural resource. Several studies have shown encouraging results for the use of red propolis in drug combinations in the treatment of patients with drug-resistant strains because of the reported synergism, as well as in nanocarriers, especially nanoparticles, for the treatment of various clinical conditions, such as leishmaniasis, in addition to dermocosmetic formulations. Therefore, the red propolis has shown great potential in the prospect of new scientific works involving the use of nanotechnology, synergism, among others, for the treatment of various diseases.
