A very common approach in the study of aging is its relationship with different pathologies or symptoms. In the present study, we propose to observe how the substantia nigra, ventral tegmental area and striatum of marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), nuclei commonly affected by aging in humans, can change morphologically according to the dopaminergic input received over the years . For this, sections immunostained with tyrosine hydroxylase and stored in the research archive of the Laboratory of Neurochemical Studies at UFRN were used. The nuclei of interest from five animals (two adults aged ~2.4 years and three elderly aged ~11 years) were analyzed by cell count and relative optical density. As a qualitative result, it was possible to visualize variations in the intensity of staining of TH-immunoreactive cells between the elderly group, with less intense staining, and the adult group, with more intense staining. Furthermore, differences between groups in the size of the nigral cell soma were also observed with a decrease with age. The observation could be confirmed semi-quantitatively since smaller values were obtained not only in the number of cells, but also in the relative optical density when comparing the elderly group with the adult group. Through this analysis, it is possible to corroborate, in the sample used, the data present in the literature and argue that normal aging in non-human primates and, probably in human primates, causes a reduction in available dopamine.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/EnvelhecimentoSistema motorNúcleos da baseÁrea tegmentar ventral.O envelhecimento no sistema motor de saguis (Callithrix jacchus) idosos: um olhar para os núcleos da base e para a tegmentar ventralAging in the motor system of aged marmosets (Callithrix jacchus): a look at the basal ganglia and the ventral tegmentarbachelorThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS BIOLOGICAS::FISIOLOGIA::FISIOLOGIA GERAL::NEUROFISIOLOGIA
