In this way, it is possible to improve the use of urban space, as well as to enable the construction of subsoils. Thus, like several cities, the metropolitan area of Natal / RN is submitted to this process of urbanization. This region, with predominance of sandy soil, presented a great real estate growth in the last decades, having a good part of its soil compromised with constructions, being therefore necessary to look for means that find the maximum use of the space. The soils reinforced with geosynthetics are presented as a technical and economically feasible option in many cases, having, in the literature, several methods indicating the procedures for sizing these structures. This article presents a comparative analysis of five recognized techniques for the design of geosynthetic reinforcement containment structures using geogrid in relation to internal stability calculated for the soil of Natal / RN. The methods proposed by Mitchell and Villet (1987), Leshchinsky and Boedeker (1989), Leshchinsky and Perry (1989), Jewell (1991), and Ehrlich and Mitchell (1994), the latter method represented only by sizing results of another work with the same soil characteristic. The techniques of designing structures based on the equilibrium limit analysis will be presented; the quantitative of reinforcement material, in heights of 2 to 10 meters; and the classical ratio for the ratio of the length of the reinforcement to the height of the retaining wall. The geotechnical characteristics of a soil of the municipality of Natal / RN, widely published in the literature, were used.
