Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study, part of the research project entitled "Human Aging and Health: the reality of institutionalized older adults in the city of Natal”, conducted from 2013 to 2015 in 10 NH (05 for-profit institutions and 05 notfor-profit institutions) in the city of Natal. Individuals over the age of 60 who reside in the institutions were included (n=320 residents). Bivariate analysis was used through the chi-square test and Poisson regression for the identification of factors associated with antipsychotic prescription. The dependent variable was the number of prescribed antipsychotics, and independent variables included sociodemographic information, as well as variables related to the institution itself and to health conditions. Results: The prevalence of antipsychotic use among the older adults was 50% (n = 160). In the forprofit institutions, 65.5% (n = 76) of the older adults used at least 1 antipsychotic, whereas the prevalence was 40.9% (n = 83) in not-for-profit NH. After multivariate analysis, older adults between the ages of 60 to 79 years (PR = 1.39) had moderate to severe cognitive impairment (PR = 1.78), mental disorder (PR = 2.07), polypharmacy use (PR = 1.30), with for-profit institutions (PR = 1.51) being positively and independently associated to the greater use of antipsychotics in older adults of NH (p <0.05).
