The character was chosen to help reflect on the systems of oppression that fat women suffer in society. Starting from the context of London's aristocracy in the 19th century, the historical moment in which Penelope finds herself, the work relates the discussion to contemporary times. Taking into account the concepts of captivity and mother-wife captivity, proposed by Lagarde (2015), as well as the myth of beauty, defined by Wolf (1992), the research points out that these systems of oppression turn on fat women, especially their bodies, outside the standard of beauty determined in such a way that they are marginalized women.
