Ecological time series study, covering the period from 2010 to 2019. The data was obtained from Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System. Deaths due to external causes were considered, based on the categories of the Large Group of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, in addition to variables such as: age group; color/race; sex and marital status. Analyzing the trend in mortality rates, the Joinpoint program was used. During the period investigated, 290,204 deaths of elderly people due to external causes were identified in Brazil, which 60.71% were men; with 80 or over (37.66%); White (57.69%) and married (37.76%). The Southeast (47.02%) and Northeast (24.10%) regions led in the number of elderly deaths due to external causes. Transport accidents (21.85%) and other external causes of accidental injuries (47.57%) stood out among the categories studied. There was an increasing trend in the mortality rate of elderly people due to external causes in Brazil for most part of the period (2010-2017), with annual percentage change of 0.91 and confidence interval of 0.6 to 1.2.
