Studies published between 2015 and 2025 were included, focusing on healthy adults and investigating the impacts of different rest durations on strength gains, muscle hypertrophy, and muscular endurance. The findings indicate that longer rest intervals (>2–3 minutes) are consistently more effective for maximizing strength performance and total training volume due to the complete recovery of energy stores. For muscle hypertrophy, evidence suggests that moderate to long intervals (>60 seconds) tend to be more advantageous, although shorter intervals (<60 seconds) may also be effective by increasing metabolic stress and muscle damage, which are relevant to hypertrophic adaptations. For muscular endurance, short intervals (≤60 seconds) remain the preferred strategy. The growing importance of individualized rest interval prescription is emphasized, considering training goals, exercise type, training level, and individual physiological responses.
