The picture books analyzed belong to the Programa Nacional da Bibiloteca da Escola (PNBE), which for more than ten years has distributed selected works to public school libraries throughout Brazil. This program enabled the access to an excellent collection of children's literature to the school community. Analyzing this collection is one way to give visibility to this patrimony available in the school. The picturebook is a multimodal and cultural production that contemplates the visual and written language, which broadens and diversifies its pedagogical potential. For the realization of their mediation it is important that the teacher and all kinds of mediators be aware of the particularities of each work and the relation of their languages, so the understanding will be not restricted only to words.
