On the other hand, a molecule that has aroused scientific interest due to its therapeutic properties is curcumin, the main polyphenol responsible for the pharmacodynamic action of turmeric. Among its properties described in the literature, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions stand out; however, its action on mucositis still needs more studies. Methods: A pre-clinical, in vivo, randomized, blinded trial was performed using control groups. 30 Golden Siriam hamsters divided into 6 groups: Control, Mechanical Trauma, 5FU + Trauma, Curcumin 05mg / kg, Curcumin 50mg / kg and Curcumin 100mg / kg. In all groups, except for the normal group and mechanical trauma, oral mucositis was induced on the first two days of the experiment with a chemotherapeutic 5-fluorouracil (5-FU, 60 mg / kg day 1 and 40 mg / kg day 2). The animals were pre-treated with Curcumin (5, 50, or 100 mg / kg) 30 min prior to the injection of 5-FU and daily until the tenth day. Oral mucosa samples were analyzed for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Results: It was observed that curcumin treatment at the concentration of 5mg/kg presented better results in relation to oxidative stress and inflammation when compared to that obtained by the 5-fluorouracil group (p <0.05).. Conclusion: Therefore, it it is suggested that Curcumin attenuated the effects caused by oral mucositis in the experimental model in hamsters induced by 5-FU.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/Mucosite oralCurcuminaAntioxidanteAnti-inflamatórioAvaliação da atividade antioxidante e anti-inflamatória da curcumina em modelo experimental de mucosite oralEvaluation of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of curcumin in experimental model of oral mucositebachelorThesis
