This study aimed to understand and evaluate the effect of artisanal fish access and consumption on household food security and women's subjective well-being in coastal communities of Rio Grande do Norte. In particular, four communities (representing municipalities or groups of fishing communities) from the northern coast were included: Caiçara do Norte, Enxu Queimado, State Sustainable Development Reserve of Ponta do Tubarão - RDSEPT (represented here by the Diogo Lopes and Sertãozinho communities), and Macau. These sites were visited in 2019, when 221 women were interviewed. Women were interviewed regarding their subjective well-being, household food security, consumption of animal protein, and food preference, which were associated with variables regarding physical, social, and economic access to fishery resources. To categorize the degree of household food security, according to the interviewee's perspective, we used a scale divided into three categories: 1) food security, when there was stable access to sufficient and satisfactory food; 2) food insecurity without hunger, when there was uncertainty and anxiety about food acquisition; 3) and food insecurity with hunger, when there was restriction in the adult's diet for more than three months. Two variables that comprised subjective well-being, Cantril Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale, were combined to form the Index of Subjective Well-Being (IBES). We then analyzed how social (e.g., age of the respondent, length of residence in the community), cultural (e.g., family food preference), and fishery-related (e.g., presence of fishermen and the frequency of fishing) aspects affect the chances of the woman and her family being food secure (logistic regression model) and their well-being (beta regression models applied to the BIES). High frequency of protein consumption, a preference for beef, and older ages were factors that contributed to explain the likelihood of being categorized in a food secure state. On the other hand, higher frequency of fishing in the family resulted in lower probability of food security. Subjective well-being was shown to be positively influenced by food security, but did not show significant results in relation to fish consumption. Greater food security and a fish-rich diet seem to contribute to women's quality of life, although households that depend more directly on fishing seem to be more vulnerable to food insecurity.Attribution 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/br/Segurança alimentar domésticaBem-estar subjetivoMulheresComunidades pesqueirasNordeste BrasileiroHousehold food securitySubjective Well-BeingWomenFishing communitiesBrazilian NortheastConsumo de pescado local, segurança alimentar e bem-estar de mulheres em comunidades pesqueiras costeiras potiguaresLocal fish consumption, food security and well-being of women in Potiguar coastal fishing communities.bachelorThesisCNPQ::CIENCIAS BIOLOGICAS
