The contamination of these waters can make their consumption harmful to humans through the presence of chemical substances, like nitrite ion, that in high concentrations can cause serious health problems. Frequent ingestion of water contaminated with nitrite is associated with a higher risk of cancer development, beside its known methemoglobin activity, affecting mainly babies and leading them to cyanosis, popularly known as blue baby syndrome. Considering these risks, the aim of this study was to determine the concentration of nitrite ion in the water of Alcaçuz, Bonfim, Muriú, and Pitangui lagoons in 2020 and 2021. The water analysis was performed using a UV/VIS molecular absorption spectrophotometer. The following values present the nitrite ion concentrations obtained in the 2020 and 2021 analyses, respectively: Alcaçuz lagoon showed non-detectable concentration and 0.07μg/mL, Bonfim lagoon showed non-detectable concentration and 0.03μg/mL, Muriú lagoon showed non-detectable concentration in the two years of analysis and Pitangui lagoon showed 0.03 μg/mL and 0.04 μg/mL, respectively. The data obtained revealed increased levels of nitrite in the water samples collected from Alcaçuz, Bonfim and Pitangui lagoons in 2021 when compared to 2020 values. These results revealed that the nitrite levels in all water samples were under the tolerable limit level of 1 μg/mL.
