Monografia (Comunicação Social - Jornalismo), Departamento de Comunicação Social, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Natal, 2023.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/57185This study introduced the term "neurowashing" to precisely and elucidatively articulate the observed phenomena. This concept highlights the manipulation of superficial representations that, despite appearing inclusive, lack a genuine and reflective portrayal of autism spectrum disorder in audiovisual media. To achieve this, the study investigated the effects of autism spectrum disorder representation on television, focusing on the analysis of autistic characters such as "Sam" from "Atypical," "Quinni" from "Heartbreak High," and "Shaun" from "The Good Doctor." Going beyond mere portrayals, the socio-economic aspects of these characters were examined to understand the breadth of their characterization in audiovisual narratives. Through the collection and analysis of information, this work provided a detailed reflection on the representation of autism spectrum disorder in the media, emphasizing the social and economic ramifications of the studied characters. Additionally, it explored the repercussions of the absence of autistic individuals in television productions and the positive impacts resulting from their inclusion, thus outlining the significance of representation.Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/3.0/br/Autista.
