According to Kowaltowski et al. (2013), BIM introduces the idea of an integrated project practice from the early stages of design. The various designers involved in the project participate in a collaborative way since the beginning of conception, making the projects compatible in a single model. In spite of studies on the use of BIM in Brazil, it is perceived the need to advance in research on the subject, such as studies that should reflect on the current dynamics of collaborative processes and the integration of academic disciplines with the aid of BIM technologies in partnership with architecture offices and engineering. In this perspective, this dissertation aims at characterizing collaborative processes aiming to the integration of projects, resulting from the implementation of BIM technologies in architecture offices in Natal/RN. The specific objectives in this study are: to understand conceptually the BIM technology, collaborative processes and integration of architecture and complementary projects; to collect as well as to understand collaborative processes that aim at integrating projects by using BIM technology in partnership with architecture and engineering offices, taking into consideration the international, national and Natal/RN contexts; identify categories of collaborative processes that aim at integrating projects, considering the analyzed cases; and explore the professional area of BIM use in Natal and in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN). Considering the objectives presented, the study is exploratory. Methodologically the research focuses on multipurpose study of collaborative design processes in partnership with architecture and engineering offices, as well as based on semi-structured interviews. Then, the content analysis was carried out, according to Bardin (2011). Parallel to the multi-purpose study, an on-line consultation was conducted through an electronic form with the architects of Rio Grande do Norte in order to understand the use of BIM in the design process. The results show that, in relation to the analyzed cases, Natal-RN presents two scenarios of collaboration: in the first, the complementary projects are modeled from links with the architecture proposal, and then the interference is verified, which are not performed automatically with specific revision tool, nevertheless in the modeling software itself based on visual observation. In this scenario there is greater possibility of data inconsistency and redundancy. In the second scenario, the collaborative process, although presenting similarities to the previous one, regarding the modeling process and the professionals involved, the use of specific coordination and revision tools during the integration of the academic disciplines contribute to the reduction of data inconsistencies. Considering the on-line consultation the results indicate that approximately two-thirds of RN architects still use CAD applications in the design process. However, most of the architects intend to use BIM tools, which is a growing trend in the use of BIM in Natal-RN.
