R. R. Tolkien (1892 - 1973) is an English writer and linguist whose work has influenced fantasy fiction as well as the Hollywood film industry for decades. However, despite the obvious importance of his work, he has been criticized for its female presence, or lack of it, in Legendary. Critics differ in opinion regarding the author, his works, and his characters, some classifying him as a misogynist and others as a feminist. The contrasts in opinion among these critics trigger doubts about Tolkien's vision regarding the feminine, besides making the interpretation of his characters confusing, demonstrating the need for further research in this area. In addition, studies aimed at analyzing the feminine in Tolkien are usually focused on certain characters to the detriment of others. Consequently, it becomes significant to analyze some of the secondary female characters in The Lord of the Rings beyond the popular characters already explored by academic literature. Therefore, the scope of the study presented here is to characterize other female characters in the trilogy, considering the perspective of gender studies. Thus, it seeks to analyze, through these characters, the probable vision of the feminine defended by Tolkien trying to favor the image of the referred author within the representativeness in the universe of the fantastic literature. In order to achieve this goal, it was sought to describe some of the female characters of The Lord of the Rings, namely Goldberry, Éowyn, and Shelob. In addition, the inspirations and influences in the development and creation of these characters were analyzed. In the end, the issue of gender in Tolkien was evaluated, taking into consideration the previous studies of the characters. In relation to such characters, the profiles/archetypes referring to the grotesque, female empowerment, and idealization were identified and discussed. From these analyses, one can notice the complexity regarding gender issues in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which ranges from characters that can be interpreted as transgressive and feminist, such as Éowyn and Shelob, to characters that fit the phallocentric female ideal, such as Goldberry. Hence, Tolkien may not be a feminist in his entirety, but his work brings out aspects of this theoretical school of thought, through the construction of characters who are empowered, rebellious, and outside the expected framework of a medieval epic story.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/Fruta d'Ouro.
