This era requires educators and students to keep up to date with the most diverse reading and writing practices and modes of language that make up the digital culture that permeates contemporaneity. In this context, Digital Information and Communication Technologies (DICT) stand out by expanding forms of interaction with the potential to improve the teaching and learning process. Based on this assumption, this study aims to investigate the collaborative production of Digital Educational Resources (DER) for English language reading teaching. The specific objectives are: (i) to analyze multiliteracies practices that lead to the designing processes developed in the collaborative production of DER with GAI; (ii) to identify competencies developed and skills activated in the collaborative production of DER with GAI. To achieve these objectives, this work is theoretically based on studies that cross Applied Linguistics, Sociocultural Literacy Studies, Multiliteracies Pedagogy, Education, and Computer Science. The collaborators in this qualitative action research are a university professor and six undergraduates who work as monitors in the English Reading Practice curricular component from the School of Science and Technology of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. As for research instruments, field notes, photographs, audiovisual recordings, questionnaire, and interviews were utilized. The digital platforms used for DER creation were Quizizz, Plickers, and Flippity. Two categories of analysis emerge from the generated data: (a) designing processes; (b) competencies and skills. The results highlight the pedagogical potential of the collaborative production of DER with GAI in expanding multiliteracy practices – like the use of GAI to generate questions and summaries in English, as well as digital platforms to create English reading DER. Additionally, skills related to the competencies of Digital Culture and Scientific, Critical, and Creative Thinking (Brazil, 2018) were observed. Among the skills from these two competencies, the following are emphasized: (i) to understand the creation of prompts in ChatGPT (prompt engineering); (ii) to recognize multimodal elements of digital platforms and their possibilities of use for pedagogical purposes; (iii) to check information provided by the GAI – quantity of words and adequacy of information; (iv) to develop English language linguistic knowledge to evaluate the quality of questions involving different contents of the target language.
