Its performance is present at all levels of complexity, which include urgent and emergency services. Despite this, the nursing work routine is permeated by a series of challenges, such as excessive workload. This factor has been continually associated with a series of risks. Objective: to identify the effects of the workload of nursing professionals who work in urgent and emergency services. Methods: this is a scope review based on the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute. The search was carried out between July and September in PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, ScopuS, Coochrane, Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) and gray literature databases. Results: the final sample comprised 16 studies from 8 different countries. Regarding the main consequences of the workload listed by the sample, the following stand out: stress, musculoskeletal disorders, medication errors, not achieving essential minimum care levels and increased risk of infection. Conclusion: The work process of the nursing team in urgent and emergency units proved to be harmful and harmful to the integrity of workers in several aspects in situations where workloads were high.
