This research was carried out in the Berilo Wanderley public school, in the 12th grade, and it dealt with the military governments in Brazil between the years 1964 and 1985, based on institutionalacts 1, 2 and 5. The research started from the following question : how to use the institutional acts 1, 2 and 5 as a source in the production of historical knowledge to understand the civil- military governments in Brazil between 1964 and 1985 ? The main objective was to analyze the importance of the use of legislation in the teaching of History and had as specific objectives : to investigate the role of the school and the trajectory of the teacher in the construction of knowledge ; to investigate the institutional acts 1, 2 and 5 as an historical source and to produce a sequence of courses to be used in the classes of 12th grade, approaching the institutional acts1, 2 and 5 as an historical source. It was about a qualitative research, in the field of history teaching, that analyzed the teaching of history and citizenship (BITTENCOURT, 2002) ; constructed a chronology of the institutional acts (SOARES, 1989) ; proposed a lesson plan able to question, develop, apply and reflect on the knowledge produced (HERMETO, 2012), and moreover, to have carried out a survey of dissertations and theses that address the importance of the legislation as an historical source.
