Objective: To understand the difficulties faced by nursing students from the Trairi Health Sciences School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (FACIS / UFRN) for participation in university extension projects of the institution. Method: from study of analytical descriptive and exploratory nature with a qualitative approach, conducted with 15 students of the nursing course of FACIS / UFRN, district of Santa Cruz / RN, who actively participated in the extension projects. Results and discussion: difficulties reported by students were related the issue of shyness, lack of preparation to convey of content, lack of materials and the sustainability in extension project procedures. Remember that the extension sometimes becomes the first contact of the student with the community.
