Through its narratives and storylines, Brazilian television drama reaches millions of viewers. However, few opportunities have been given to Black artists to secure prominent roles in these productions. The situation becomes even more delicate when we ask: where are the romances for these characters? Do they have the right to love? With this in mind, the objective of this study is to analyze the interracial couples in the telenovela Vai na Fé, written by Rosane Svartman and aired in 2023 on Rede Globo at 7 PM. This research aims to highlight the significant number of romantic pairs featured throughout the series—eleven in total. The popular tone of the storyline brought Black characters to the forefront, characters who are often marginalized or rendered invisible in other productions. Yet, most of the Black cast in Vai na Fé belonged to the poor narrative arc, reinforcing a well-worn stereotype. This study hypothesizes that the increase in interracial relationships in Vai na Fé was an attempt to break the invisibility of Black artists in Brazilian television drama, though it still echoed the stereotype of the impoverished Black character. To understand the theme addressed in this study, we will draw on Lopes (2003, 2009, 2019) and Hamburger (2005, 2011), who examine the history of Brazilian telenovelas. To explore the representation of Black characters, we will refer to Araújo (2000, 2019, 2006, 2008) and Sodré (1999). For discussions on invisibility, representation, intersectionality, violence experienced by Black people, and structural racism, we will consult Nascimento (1978), Gonzalez (2020), Almeida (2019), Hall (2016), and Akotirene (2019). The methodology chosen is Motta's (2013) critical narrative analysis and the image analysis based on Diana Rose's (2002), using a qualitative approach.
