Objective: to implement a standard operating protocol for early skin-to-skin contact between mother and newborn within the first hour after birth at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Center at Parnamirim in Rio Grande do Norte Maternity Hospital. Methodology: Four training workshops were held with the Divine Love Maternity Ward team in order to clarify the topic and enable the obstetrical team to perform the standard operating procedure and implantation in the service. To make the workshops viable, an extension event was promoted by the School of Health of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte from 08/03/19 to 03/22/2019. During the workshops, pre and post-tests were applied to measure the knowledge acquired by participants after dialogic expository classes, demonstration of skin-to-skin contact through dramatizations using dummies e construction of Self-explanatory Banners and Posters that have been ceded to this maternity ward. Results: The effectiveness of the training performed in the workshops was verified, with a significant increase in the number of successful participants in the post-test, after exposure and discussion of the content for the health team. It was noticed a total adhesion of the nursing staff of the delivery room. Opinions of judges (obstetricians and pediatricians) were carried out to adaptation and validation of the protocol to the reality of Divino Amor Maternity. Final considerations: It is hoped that with the implantation of Standard Operational Procedure skin-to-skin contact may contribute to humanized assistance and consequently favor maternal and child well-being, from the perspective of good health practices to the mother and baby.
