Um médico, uma maternidade: uma história da atuação de Januário Cicco na construção da Maternidade de Natal (1940 – 1948). Orientador: Raimundo Nonato Araújo da Rocha. 2023. 130 f. Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação em História) - Departamento de História, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. Natal, 2023.https://repositorio.ufrn.br/handle/123456789/57663This study analyzes the relationship between the doctor Januário Cicco and the construction of the Natal Maternity Hospital in the period between 1940 and 1948, when the aforementioned hospital was requisitioned by the Ministry of War to serve as a military hospital and Army Headquarters in Natal, until period following the return of the building. It is emphasized that in the highlighted time frame, a turbulent period was experienced both in the world and in Brazil, which brought to light great complexities. Throughout the text we sought to understand, on the one hand, how Dr. Januário Cicco favored the construction of an imaginary among the population of Natal that he would have legitimacy to speak on behalf of poor, motherly women; and, on the other, like this character, he used politically in the city of Natal the authority he exercised in the scientific, literary and religious fields. The research was carried out taking into account authors, such as Rodrigo Otávio da Silva, who dealt with the doctor's life and is based, above all, on journalistic sources, such as the newspapers A Ordem and Diário de Natal. This is qualitative research, with narrative characteristics, whose central objective is to understand how Dr. Januário Cicco modified the structure and practices then in force at the Maternity Hospital, maintaining some of the institution's original characteristics. From a theoretical point of view, the work is based on Ferdinand Braudel and Pierre Bourdieu. Braudel's ideas were useful for the perception that territorial space is a social construction, which highlights the understanding that space has multiple dimensions. Bourdieu's thought was essential, as it enabled the understanding of the notions of symbolic power, symbolic system, habitus and symbolic power of knowledge. It is concluded by the emotional and rational complexity of the personality of the doctor Januário Cicco, who was, at the same time and paradoxically, creator of his history and creature of his historical time. The work revealed the need for further investigations on the topic.Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazilhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/br/Maternidade de NatalMaternityMãe pobrePoor motherSaúde PúblicaScience and AssistanceCiência e AssistênciaPolitical PersonalityJanuário CiccoJanuário CiccoUm médico, uma maternidade: uma história da atuação de Januário Cicco na construção da Maternidade de Natal (1940 – 1948)One doctor, one maternity hospital: a story of Januário Cicco's role in the construction of the Natal Maternity Hospital (1940 – 1948)bachelorThesis
